World premiére Torment of Hearts

23.01.2025

Set design / BE

Torments of Heart, a new project by choreographer Femke Gyselinck/ GRIP will prémiere in Magdalena Zaal on Thursday 23 January 2025, at 8pm. Gyselinck was approached by B-Rock orchestra to work together on Bach's ‘dialogue cantatas’. Along the way, they decided to think outside the box: What other music could they add? From which period? Contemporary as well? What dance language could they use? What, if any, is the overarching theme?

The result is Torment of Hearts, in which three dancers, two singers and an ensemble of seven musicians give shape to different manifestations of loneliness triggered by four pieces of music from three different centuries. Aslı Çiçek was invited to design the set for this beautiful project. As in their previous collaborations, Gyselinck and Çiçek met on the common ground of their interest in complexity made possible by simplicity, which resulted in an elegant and powerful spatial atmosphere.
